Every June, Christians find themselves navigating the same question: What is the Christian response to Pride Month?
For some, the answer seems straightforward. Stand for biblical truth. For others, the conversation feels much more personal. Perhaps you have a family member, friend, neighbour or colleague who identifies as LGBTQIA+. Maybe you’ve wondered how to remain faithful to Scripture while still reflecting the love of Christ.
These conversations are not going away. If anything, they have become a more visible part of our culture each year.
Truth Without Love Isn’t the Gospel
Greg Bondar from Christian Voice Australia joined us on Vision’s 20Twenty and reflected on the challenge many believers face during Pride Month.
“The second greatest commandment, love your neighbour, comes to mind,” Greg said.
That command doesn’t become optional when conversations around sexuality and gender become difficult.
As Christians, it can be tempting to focus so heavily on defending truth that we forget the people standing in front of us. We are called to follow the example of Jesus, who never reduced people to labels, struggles or mistakes. He loved them completely.
Every person we meet carries the image of God. Every person has value, dignity and worth because they were created by Him.
Love Without Truth Isn’t Love
Greg believes that biblical love does not require us to abandon biblical convictions.
“We have to make sure that we don’t forgo our own Christianity at the expense of supporting a particular lifestyle,” he said. “Let’s love our neighbour, but let’s keep to the truth of the Word and the truth of the Gospel.”
We need to understand that holding to biblical truth is not an act of hatred. Neither is it a licence to be harsh or self-righteous. Jesus was perfectly full of both grace and truth, and He never compromised either. And we are called to do the same.
Pride Month Is Also a Moment for Self-Reflection
When Pride Month arrives, it’s easy to point fingers and cast judgement on what is happening around us. It is also an important time to look inwards at our own hearts and realise that we all fall short. Pride is not just a cultural issue, but a human issue.
We all have placed our desires above God’s design at some point. We’ve been stubborn, arrogant and self-righteous. All of us.
We all desperately need Jesus, and we need to remember that the ground at the foot of the cross is level. Every one of us comes to Jesus in need of mercy.
How Do We Respond During Pride Month?
Faithfulness during Pride Month looks remarkably similar to faithfulness during every other month of the year. When we remain faithful, God’s love begins to seep into the lives of people around us and we start to see change.
Greg mentioned that there has been a recent collapse of same-sex marriage in America. A recent Gallup survey revealed that since 2022, there’s been a 9% drop in support towards same-sex marriage. Greg is hopeful, calling it a “trend of reversal”. This significant drop gives us a hope and encourages us to remain faithful in God’s truth.
That’s not always easy. It requires wisdom, humility and dependence on God. But it reflects the heart of Jesus.
Keeping Jesus at the Centre
As conversations around sexuality and gender continue, Christians have an opportunity to model something increasingly rare in our culture: conviction without hostility, truth without compromise and love without condition.
That doesn’t mean everyone will agree with us. But it does mean our response should look like Jesus.
So, what is the Christian response to Pride Month? It looks like holding firmly to God’s truth while extending the same grace and mercy that Christ has shown us.
